Brilliant example of Online Viral Marketing: Offer the Best Job in the World

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Queensland Australia’s Tourism Agency came up with a brilliant way to promote the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef. They offered The Best Job in the World: Island Caretaker.

The Island Caretaker will need to post a weekly blog, photo diaries and create video updates to let the world know about the unique experiences available on the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef. There will also be some interviews with members of the media. The contract involves spending six months on Hamilton Island, one of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef. The Island Caretaker will also travel to other islands and enjoy activities such as sailing, kayaking, snorkelling, diving, picnics, bushwalking and more.

Interested applicants had to submit a video explaining why they were the person best qualified for the job. The videos were posted on the website and right now they are being reviewed. The campaign was so successful, people from all over the world applied for the job. (You can see the videos here.) And of course, awareness of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef is higher than ever, so tourism is most certainly expected to rise with this creative effort. And it’s a long term strategy too; imagine all the people that are now going to follow up on the adventures of the lucky person who gets the world’s best job!
